This song was written before and after my transition into being a father. Before, I had anxieties of whether I would live up to his expectations about me and about living in Asheville with us. I was worried about whether I would be a good father. Its very strange to suddenly step into a child's life halfway through their childhood and become their parent. I suddenly had power dynamics to balance, personality traits to understand and emotional baggage to unpack. My mind was full of worry and excitement. This song was a way for me to set intentions of dedication to bring this child to adulthood. The picture below was taken on the first day of Josh living with me.
lyrics
I hope I live up
to your expectations.
Know that I will always
be there for you.
The ripetide may have captured you
but I am here
to take you home
and show you that
the world is full of love.
I know you're strong
and very bright
and you will go far.
I never want you to feel alone in this world.
You have shattered
all of my expectations.
Now I feel a way
that I've never felt before.
Now we are a family
you
and me
and Tashi
and brother, sister yet to come.
She will always live inside your heart.
Pain and change
are a part of life
that only makes you stronger.
Its getting better.
